Hello and welcome back!
I hope you love today’s idea as much as I do. I thought we needed a little fun to welcome us all back to the classroom so this is one that should make vocabulary lessons a bit lighter and even entertaining. I am also recommended a site inside a site today so you will get both a great teacher blog and a resource-rich website with writing ideas galore just for tuning in again!
Today’s suggestion begins with Ms. Jasztal at Jasztalville: Where Inquiry and Creativity Rules. On her site, she posted some great resources for writing instruction. One of these featured is WritingFix, is a terrific website with tons of ideas for writing prompts, responses, narratives and more. The section on writing sketchbooks is full of activities based off different subjects and forms, including chapter books, picture books, historical figures, and poetry. For example, check out Personify Vocabulary, in which students choose a vocabulary word and create a fashion show model based on the word. You can see in the sample below, a student chose “cacophonous” (having a harsh, unpleasant sound) as the vocabulary word and created a person wearing a gong for a shirt. Students then create a short script to read as their word “model” walks down the runway. Students can form groups to collaborate and create a fashion show of different models to read/act out for the classroom.
Thanks for the tip, Ms. Jasztal!
