If you are a science teacher or a sixth grade teacher (or just a fun teacher), you need to know about Mr. Hofer’s blog. There are too many neat ideas out there to choose just one post, but I loved this insect project because I am crazy about lessons that integrate art into other subject areas.
The lesson called for students to demonstrate their knowledge of insect anatomy. Mr. Hofer had his sixth grade students create a new insect species using pipe cleaners, plastic bottles, construction paper, and other materials. Students could pair up to help each other. This simple support may be enough to differentiate for some, but if not, you can also give learners a “cheat sheet” or checklist with required pieces or even photos of examples to help students struggling with the requirements.
