Take a suggestion from Panicked Teacher’s Blog and have students come up with the rubric for their next writing assignment. Students may have a better understanding of both the “what” and the “why” of a rubric when they have contributed to it. Further, they can learn and teach others about “good writing” by taking some time to think about what makes a high or low scoring assignment. Finally, creating these guidelines and hanging them up for all to see serves as a great support for visual learners as they proofread assignments. If all of your students are not using the same rubrics and you are differentiating your assessment, you could have students keep their individual visuals inside their notebook covers or desktops.
