How do you informally assess learners? Miss. Roeckle (over at Cheryl’s Classroom Tips) sometimes asks students to complete an “entrance slip” math problem to see if they understand the previous day’s lesson. For instance, before teaching multiplication, she gave all of her students the addition/subtraction money problem below. Then she introduced a new math game for students to play. As students who mastered the question played the game, the teacher met with a small group of students who needed extra instruction. The group playing the game, therefore, got time to apply what had been previously learned while the smaller group received a bit more direct instruction- a win-win solution.
