Give your students a microphone and let them pretend to be a broadcaster while reading at their next small group reading center. Miss Kindergarten uses “Radio Reading” to transform reluctant readers into enthusiastic announcers. Your students can build fluency unintentionally, as they entertain their peers with a “show”.
This technique can be especially helpful for students with autism and related needs as those students may feel anxiety when they need to communicate directly. Indirect communication (e.g. communicating as a “character”, using props) can often help a student relax and perform more successfully.
